{"id":15597,"date":"2010-06-14T03:00:03","date_gmt":"2010-06-14T10:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vitalhealth.com\/blog\/?p=33"},"modified":"2019-04-29T10:56:26","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T17:56:26","slug":"freezing-nails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vitalhealth.com\/endo-blog\/freezing-nails\/","title":{"rendered":"Freezing Nails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css_animation=&#8221;fadeIn&#8221;]I am a 5<sup>th<\/sup> generation Californian.\u00a0 My Grandmother (who has passed away) was in the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake as a young girl and was one of few women who attended Berkeley (University of California at Berkeley) in the 1910\u2019s.\u00a0 I was born and raised in Southern California.\u00a0 This was before it was one big concrete jungle.\u00a0 We had fields to pay in and went sailing quite a bit.\u00a0 My family moved to Evergreen, Colorado when I was in the 9<sup>th<\/sup> grade.\u00a0 Evergreen is a small town in the mountains of Colorado about a half hour west of Denver.\u00a0 The nearest paved road was miles from our house.\u00a0 Quite a change from Southern California.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While always an outstanding student in elementary school and junior high, I did ok in high school.\u00a0 I was bored and didn\u2019t always go to class.\u00a0 I worked in construction starting at 16 and always worked after school and holidays.\u00a0 I started as a laborer and worked up over the years to framing houses and doing most everything short of electrical and plumbing.\u00a0 During one of the economic downturns, the company got down to just the owner of the construction company and myself.\u00a0 We did mostly remodels and fixing fire damage.\u00a0 For a while, I thought I would just do this type of work the rest of my life.<\/p>\n<p>One freezing Christmas holiday I was helping frame a house (making the wood walls that go on the foundation).\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it got much above zero degrees that day.\u00a0 It was so cold that the metal nails would stick to my fingers when I touched them.\u00a0 I thought this is crazy.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to spend the rest of my life doing this.\u00a0 I had also seen co-workers seriously injured and almost loose fingers with the saws.<\/p>\n<p>I decided it was time to get serious.\u00a0 I actually opened a book and studied.\u00a0 I received straight A\u2019s that last semester.\u00a0 I continued to study hard during college, although I was not really sure what I wanted to do.\u00a0 I liked people and I liked helping people.\u00a0 At first, I thought I would become a psychologist later changing my major to teaching school.\u00a0 I spent half a year as an Exchange Student in Japan.\u00a0 I learned a lot about the world and life in general.<\/p>\n<p>I was fortunate to have maintained outstanding grades during my first four years of college so that I could change to pre-med my senior year.\u00a0 I applied to various medical schools and was fortunate to get into Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.\u00a0 It was not easy to get into an out of state school, but I had done well on my MCAT\u2019s (national entrance exam for medical school) and I guess did ok on my in-person interview\u2019s.\u00a0 I was so excited and honored to get into Baylor.\u00a0 It was one of the best medical schools in the country and was one of the largest medical centers in the country with outstanding surgeons.\u00a0 There were about 4,500 hospital beds at the hospitals associated with Baylor and the world famous heart surgeons and pioneer\u2019s Drs.
